OK what next? £300+ on tyres but still doing it. My thoughts are now auxiliary belt and get all the transmission oil changed. It's like a droning noise. I noticed that it changes slightly when the wheel is turned so that got me thinking about the belt because of the power steering pump. Could be. Do you have the service history? AFAIR the serpentine belt is changed every 60K miles or 6 years. You should be able to tell by having a good look and poke at the belt whether it’s past it’s best. Cannot remember what the trans oils change period is but I do recall that the 4.2 is very fussy about the spec of oil used in the gearbox, diffs and transfer box. The wrong weight of oil will cause problems.

Yes firemac. I've had it from new. Back in 2008 was when the belt was changed. We both posted on a thread about the belt on the toc forum. Booked in for tomorrow. Needs doing even it is not that.

I showed Andy and Don how to do gearbox, rear diff, and tranny box oil on wife’s now gone 3 door. The smell of the tranny box oil filled the street....! Andy got that job. Gears were much smoother changing and whole car seemed to quieten down.....wurff it imho.

When changing the serpentine belt get the tensioner done at the same time as the bearing in the roller does wear. Could be the source of the drone maybe?

The smell of the tranny box oil filled the street....! Andy got that job. You sure that wasn't the smell of cremated pork and pastry product? (I have a elephant's memory and will only let that one go once I've gone completely senile. )
(or maybe I just hadn't had a shower).
