Hi i was going home and all of a sudden my 05plate 4 d4 started to slow and stop, there was a rattle. i coudn't see anything wrong but i called the aa. they came and said it was top end and not to drive it. they picked it up and took to the mechanic i use. He said he would look at it ,he came up with needs a new oil pump, timing belt , water pump. £600 later still no good. starts but rattles, he said it needs new engine. after i picked myself up. i carefully drove it home. about 2 miles. been on my drive since. i love this car it is so good to drive. i can have a go at most things but i am disabled. if anybody could suggest anything i would be so grateful. i live in norwich norfolk.
Many thanks

Hi and Has anyone mentioned the dual mass flywheel [DMF]? What mileage has it done? If you fill in your user profile with details of your RAV it will help guide anyone with suggestions so that they don't have to read back :TU:

Many thanks Do these engines even have a timing belt ? Toyota’s are usually chain drive. IF it is belt was the old one snapped ? Your mechanic should not take 600 notes off you if he hasn’t fixed the problem, Fact is he may have made it worse.

if the dmf is gone would i have had notice that it is on it's way out. also can you put a normal flywheel on instead of a dmf. it goes in and out of gear fine, moves easy, clutch feels ok. i know turbo gone, he said there was a nut in it. Need the car as stuck without it. many thanks to all for help.

Many thanks Bearing in mind that I'm no mechanic - I suspect that my post history proves that! ... The man from the AA said " it was top end and not to drive it" - the guys from the AA / RAC do tend to be mechanics and are probably correct when they make an on the spot diagnosis like that. He would certainly be able to detect a DMF issue so I'd doubt it was the clutch ... ? The mechanic has diagnosed a failed timing belt and replaced it. So as Andy has said we are probably looking at a 1CD-FTV 2.0 engine. And we still have a (top end) rattle ... doesn't that sound like valve damage resulting from the loss of the timing belt on an interference engine? The mechanic "said it needs new engine" - he might not be wrong - though I hope I am ...

Thanks to all the replies. philip42h i asked the mechanic to change the belt and while he was at it to change the tensioner and water pump. it was like it went into limp mode, then i pulled into a layby and it died. it starts up no problem but rattles. then as said before it went to the mechanic. Still trying to work out what is wrong as haven't got lot of cash. i cant see it being dmf as it goes in gear easy and clutch works fine. could the rattle be turbo, and power loss some sort of censor. sorry i am clutching at straws. once again THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR IMPUT. be safe out there. life is to short.

Or a careless mechanic.
