Different focus but that story reminded me of an incident when I was fishing last week. I had seen red kites near the lake previously but was really surprised to see one swoop down and take a small fish from the surface. Very impressive.

I've just been having a coffee in the garden and watching a buzzard circling up in a thermal over the local wood. I'm sure that they do adjust the attitude of their wings but it appeared that it did nothing but float up and up in a circle with no input or effort. Nature being absolutely wonderful again! Ever been in that situation where you desperately need your binos but dare not take your eyes off the bird in case you can't find it again?

There are lots of them in the Chilterns area. There was a documentary a few years back how the ruffle their feathers to spoil the aerodynamics just before the hook their pray and take off without really landing.

Yes, I had a personal demonstration of that technique. As you say, very impressive. Less impressive [for the red kite] is the way that a single crow can chase one away.

Not an Ornithologist, but i think it is more to do with the fact that the red kite is not a pack bird, and the crow is. I would think that like cats they avoid fights (unless they hunt) as they will have not have any help from anyone. Probably they like to choose their battles.

Our blue tits fledged ages ago Bob. Currently watching a pair of blackbirds feeding a juvenile ten feet from me as I type this.

Watching adult and juvenile great spotted woodpecker on bird feeder 15' away but daren't move to get the camera for a photo as they are really skittish and fly off at the slightest sign of movement. Both pecking away at the sunflower hearts but adult also feeding the youngster directly too.

My daughter loves watching the birds she’s been asking for a bird table for a while now. I think I might get one for her and get someone to fix it. Been reading and watching the YouTube videos with interest and it’s fascinating
