We got the seeds and fat balls from B&M - it seem our birds only like sunflower seeds and fat balls. yes - same as you we managed to get the fat balls on offer - and if I remember correctly the seeds were on offer as well. Very interesting - the bird spent most of the day in the nest - not building anything just moving around and looking outside (not a very interesting video - lots of tail pictures) And now for the squirrel story... As I said above, I had to raise the feed table height, and I also put a square downpipe to prevent Mr squirrel climbing: I win...Or so I thought... I lost :-(After a few days of search, came up with this: The baffle!which seem to hold so far! Note that there were lots of iterations in between... all which failed.

You have no chance with squirrels.

Another one and I blame all the Documentaries/TV Programmes/Assault Courses set up over the years, into training/conditioning the greys into being able to do this.
Gotta love 'em, gotta hate 'em.
...some people also have too much time on their hands.

Yes, I have seen all these videos... people around me were very 'supportive' and sent me those while i struggled to come up with a solution. The baffle seem to work (so far...) but also there is nothing high so he can jump from within 3m of the table. Initially, the table was close to the trellis behind, and he jumped about 2m to get there.

Installed yesterday the camera looking at the feed table. I had to move the table a bit as the motion sensor was not activated. A flock of Goldfinches came this morning to feed.

Have you defeated the squirrels, for the moment anyway? Do not want to boast, but it seem so. They are coming into the garden, but do not even attempt climbing to the feeders. Before you ask... the baffle is a 5L olive oil bottle from Costco, with the bottom cut, a temporary experiment that I do not see a reason to change.

It'll be fine until they get a taste for olive oil infused PET plastic ![]()

Over here the power companies put a strip of aluminium about 18inches wide around their power poles. This is very slippery and so stops possums climbing the poles and killing themselves by electrocution. Of course it's not all for the possums benefit though it's to stop them causing power outages. Perhaps a similar application would stop squirrels, would aluminium baking foil also work for you?

I tried waxing it, butter-ing it (with hot pepper to deter them) - nothing worked, he managed at the end. If the pole was big enough so the squirrel cannot 'hug' it, yes it might work, but as long as he can 'hug' the pole he managed to go up, even on a very slippery pole.

For some time we suspect that there are a pair of Blue Tits, but could never corollate which one is using the boxes. This morning this clip was recorded where both came in to the nest at the same time. We just hope they are going to build their nest there!

Yup, noticed Blue Tits prospecting our nest boxes during the week too. Anyone else doing the RSPB birdwatch over the weekend?
