Let’s hope people follow the rules this time round and follow the guidelines. This time schools and universities will be staying open didn’t they say last time that children are super spreaders? I’m assuming if the figures don’t drop during this mini lockdown then what next? The sooner this is over the better

I’m assuming if the figures don’t drop during this mini lockdown then what next? The sooner this is over the better Unfortunately I think we are in for the long haul all the lockdowns can do is to try and keep the numbers having to be treated in hospital down to something manageable, I cannot really see an end even a vaccine is unlikely to be more effective than a flu vaccine is (for flu) and although the flu vaccine does help a lot of vulnerable people it is far from a cure all. Hopefully i am totally wrong.

I can’t see this new lockdown working. As long as the kids go to school the potential for spread is huge. Work carries on no real changes except to shops and hospitality .
Pubs again to close which may help. Anyone who saw the idiots in Nottingham performing the other night would agree that they need stopping but not all hospitality results in that sort of ridiculous behaviour.
But why with this rapidly escalating situation does this new lockdown have to wait till Thursday ?

See I’m in agreement with the kids being at school will not help as the numbers have increased rapidly since September. Like you said if the figures are that bad why are they waiting till Thursday? Earlier in the week they were saying the figures were higher in the spring than they are now so then surely shouldn’t it be stricter? Honestly I hope we can come out of this sooner than later

Honestly looking at what I’ve seen myself it just feels like people don’t care. Either way maybe this time it may be better with the colder weather and dark nights. Let’s hope at least we can meet family and friends on Christmas at least

Well I would like to pass on my best wishes to you all and hope you get through this "lockdown" without any personal loss.
My wife and I still have family residing in the U.K. so we do understand your concerns about near and dear friends and relatives.
I try to be positive so bearing that in mind just think about all the wear and tear on your vehicles that will be reduced and the money for fuel that you will save. Of course it won't make any difference to Charlie's Bank balance as I have heard a rumour that his cars run on mere fumes anyway.

Let’s hope at least we can meet family and friends on Christmas at least Same here in France but the shutdown was two days after the announcement, the reason for the delay was to allow all the legal stuff to be put in place, But we are starting to get stiff opposition, the non food small traders are complaining that they are shut, but people can still go to supermarkets and buy many non food items that they would normally supply, clothes, shoes, garden stuff, stationary, toys etc, to be honest they do have a point. As far as xmas i am afraid i am very bah humbug, i have no problem with families getting together for a few days for what should be a fairly significant celebration in the Christian calendar has turned into a massive commercial entity lasting two-three months, often forcing especially low income families into debt. My feeling is xmas shouldn't be mentioned or in the shops until at least 1st December, same with Easter, I remember going to tesco many years ago on 27th December and they already had easter eggs on the shelves.

Some consider the corona virus act to give the government too much emergency power without scrutiny. I thought there was talk of changing the act so any further lockdowns had to be subject to a parliamentary vote. I'm not sure whether that happened or not. So, plenty of time between now and Thursday to attend a super-spreader event party outside a pub in a nearby English city.

Thankfully Baroness Moan/Lady Moan has won a £122m contract to manufacture 25m gowns just 44 days after setting up a new company - so proof we have equality in giving contracts to Scottish women Tories......I'm fair looking forward to my gown as my jammies are getting too tight. As I believe, in Scotland, the restaurants can re-open to serve food until 6pm like the cafes, but serve no alcohol.....so you need to get tanked up before going for a meal. Or carry a bottle in your handbag. As regards small shops....surely restricted numbers, sanitiser and masks would be safe.

But if I understand correctly, VAT is now being/will be applied to masks, obligatory to wear them but obviously not an essential enough item to be VAT free.
Oh just looked it up.
There was a temporary change to Zero VAT between May and end of October, but I could find no news about this being extended, if that is the case you now have to pay VAT.

Personally I think that all this "saving Xmas" crap is just that - complete bo11ocks!
What are we, frigging 5-year olds? Thanks to this 2nd lock down most folks won't be able to afford bloody Xmas! IMHO the economy trumps any holiday/festival.
On a practical note however, the RAV's booked into my local Mr.T for an MoT and service on Monday 9th Nov. I wonder if they'll still be open? 🤔

There are far to many who think the rules don’t apply to them or sod Ive had enough and will carry on anyway. The examples set by some politicians gives to many the excuse to do as they please. If it’s down to people following strict rules Christmas will get spoiled. I’m no big enthusiast of it anyway. To many folk spending money they don’t have on what in reality is crap. Andy is correct the final decision is subject to a parliamentary vote. But as they all agree why ? More stupidity. Went into Tesco early this afternoon to get some veg. There was an idiot arguing with a member of staff over him refusing to wear a mask. I had to walk away and say nothing as I don’t think I would have held my temper. They threw him out anyway. This is the problem. The “ idiot thick mongrel “ factor.

When I mention Xmas it’s more about spending time with family presents and gifts don’t bother us. There’s 5 of us in our household before we even consider other family. This year I’ve only seen my mom once due to not being well myself so was more difficult and I am/was looking forward to spending time with her during the Xmas holidays. Thankfully we have the phone and my brother gets her on FaceTime to speak to the kids. Not watched the news yet as I’ve not had a chance but the wife mentioned that they’re talking about the possibility of an extension and schools closing too. She’s already had an email and WhatsApp message that some staff will be getting moved to other clinics/hospitals depending on how the numbers play out.
