My friend (one that doesn't know me that well lol) has asked for my esteemed opinion on a couple of cars and a landrover. For sale on gumtree RAV4 Springburn car salesRAV4 silverFreelander with 14 service recordsI think he is tempted by the freelander due to its service history. One of the RAVs comes with a new steering box fitted so it says. I have said I can manage to see them tomorrow but a heads up would be good. I know about the clutch judder thing dmf; the filler pipe as I've done 2 of them before... messy job but not too difficult. Freelander I've always thought should be avoided. thanks. Maybe if Big Kev is about, he could comment on Springburn cars ?

The RAV4 has the optional Nudge Bar - not cheap, and also genuine Toyota Driving Lights - insanely expensive and rare (think that is onlt the second time I have seen them fitted - first one being mine!). Also non-standard smoked tailgate spoiler added and Chrome Light Guards. Chances are with those kind of extras on, the owner took great car of their car. Even the wheels look very decent from the photos. Only thing I can think of to check beyond the usual normal checks is belts - Cambelt every 5/6 Years or 60,000 miles. has that been done?
Looks very nice for the money to me and probably won't be around for sale long.
Freelander looks tidy. Big 4 year 40,000+ mile gap in Service History though. I bet the RAV4 will have been serviced better looking at the condition.

Ian, my first foray into the world of SUV's was with a couple of Freelanders. Both were petrol, the second one being the 2.5 V6 which was a bit of a beast. Anyway, what to look out for, first off rub your hand around the circumference of all tyres. If you can feel flats, i.e. The tyre feels like the shape of a 10 bob bit, walk away. The reason being that the viscous coupling on the rear prop shaft is ceased. This means it is in constant all wheel drive and because ther is no centre diff it is bouncing around corners causing transmission wind up hence the unusual tyre wear. There is also a good chance the the IRD (intermediate reduction drive) will be damaged. This is the system on the gearbox which sends drive to the front and rear. The Freelander as it stands is front wheel drive until the front wheels spin, this activates the goo in the viscous coupling on the rear prop which sends drive to the rear. Another thing to watch out for, and you will need to look underneath, is to make sure that the the rear prop shaft is still fitted. Some cheating bar stewards get around the problems above by removing the prop and thereby making it front wheel drive only. The electrics can also be a bit shoddy, so check everything actually works and watch out for sticky switches. I actually liked my Freelanders, but I guess I was lucky when it came to reliability.
Edit, Also lift the carpets and covers in the tailgate area. The window in the tailgate is electric and goes up and down just like the fronts. The seals are problematic though and can let water in so get right into the underfloor rear storage area and check for a puddle.

Brilliant - thanks for these comments Dave and Hoovie ! My friend is an electrician and was looking for a vehicle to replace his troublesome Renault van and give him use of a car too so I think the size of these works for him..and he knows of the RAV reliability lol.

Hi Big Kev - yes.. ur right ! Engine lumpy; steering rack knackered; bonnet looked as it had been torched then someone tried t-cutting with a stihl saw; 5th gear jumping; The other rav (silver) had solid flywheel clutch fitted recently but the clutch dragging slightly meant 1st gear was awkward to get into. And the rear door trims wee out of line with the bodywork. Freelander had a steam engine fitted judging by the white smoke, what about this one .... later model - is this a 4.3? Challenging my memory on the 2.2 diesel ! XTRWhy is my link no working ??

Same model, colour and year as mine without the leather Ian. 'Tis indeed a 4.3 with 2.2 diesel. Mine's on 114K now and still returns 42mpg [sometimes more depending on type of usage and ambient temp] I do now dose with Archoil at fill ups when I remember. Does it have a full and complete Toyota service and maintenance history? Do check that the Aircon is working correctly - mine's had two heater box/control units which involved dash out and a high cost to Toyota warranty [now expired ] There is a 'self test' routine: www.trav4.net/check_mode_procedure-808.htmlFiller down pipe can corrode and it should have had all the recall work done - rear suspension locking nut mod, electric window switch check from memory. www.toyota.co.uk/owners/vehicle-information/recall-checker.jsonHave a look at the rear shocks for leaks. Exterior looks in great condition [unlike mine which is currently filthy] EDIT - Ad states spare wheel. They never had one so check under boot floor for jack, tools, pump and expiry date of tyre gunk.

I thought this car would be a better option as a 4.3 with younger hinges. Disappointing viewing the other cars today as the 2 RAVs really hadn't been looked after. The one with a solid flywheel and clutch fitted had the clutch grabbing with the pedal barely off the floor... my friendly mechanic when i called him said it may need adjusted with shims or whatever (but without seeing it, suggested it might be a cheap clutch job) and best avoiding.

depending on what kind of miles he is doing, a Petrol RAV4.3 could be a good option

One of our Ravs may have to go unfortunately. DVLA want me to have another driving assessment. I flew through it last time hoping I do again too but it’s quite tough to be honest and understandly has to be. 😞😞
