Hello again, so you may or may not know but I bought my first RAV4 on Thursday which is a 2003 2.0 D-4D 3Door NRG with 148000 miles. It came with full Toyota service history up to 2016 and then from there was serviced independently but unfortunately comes with very little information on any work done from them. I’ve had the car 3 days now and overall I’m loving it! The car is just perfect for what I was looking for. However sadly there is some issues starting to appear which I need some help and advice on.
First issue is starting it up: now the day I got the car it was started fine and I stopped a few times on my way home and no problems re starting at all. Then the next morning turned the key all dash lights come on but nothing! No clicking, no sign of any attempt for it to turn the engine over at all. So I had to bump it of my drive. Then when I stopped after an hour or so or driving turned it off got back in 10 minutes later exact same thing! Wouldn’t start so had to bump it again (lucky I bought manual) and so this has been the same problem every time I turn it off! Is it a just a simple case of changing the battery or is this a common issue with these cars and I’m unaware of the problem? As a new battery is not very cheap. So before I replace it thought I would put the question out there first.
Second issue: I was driving on a duel carriage way doing around 50mph went to over take a lorry and then all of a suddenI lost all the power and the EML came on. I quickly pulled over luckily the road was on an incline so I could bump start it cos my starting problems! (phew). But whilst I was stopped I did a little googling and found this is a very common issue! However what I have not been able to find is the actual cure the problem?! I restarted it and the light went out and power was back to normal. I’m planning on replacing the following parts within the next few weeks or so to try and stop the issue re-occurring but if anyone does know what it is that exactly causes this problem then please let me know before I go spending all my money for no reason.
• Both (red & green) suction control valves
• Fuel filter
• MAF sensor
• EGR valve
Now after I’ve replaced all those and the problem was to happen again I will then go ahead and get a new turbo. But ideally if I can from the help of you guys then I maybe able to prevent getting all those parts and stop the problem from happening again if anyone can tell me what it is that causes the problem.
Third issue: the car alarm goes off after about an hour of it being parked up?!once I unlock and lock it again it’s fine but I have no idea what is causing it to go off. It only does it the one time but it’s every day after I get it home?
Forth issue: This doesn’t happen every time and it’s only done it maybe 3 or 4 times but occasionally when I start it there is something knocking coming from underneath on the front passenger side. It’s not a continuous knocking just a one time clonk.
So there it is, these are all the issues I’m currently dealing with and I’m determined to get them all done as even though I do have these problems I still love the car. And I know that when I’ve them all resolved I’ll love it even more!
So before I go, I want to just say a BIG BIG thank you to everyone who takes the time to read this and any help or advice given from anyone will be very much appreciated! Thanks again and Its great to be apart of the RAV4 family. Take care everyone Rick
