Cast iron exhaust manifold cracked on my Bedford Green Goddess - happens on these engines I'm told. 6 cylinder running a dizzy compression of 6:1...could probably wrap a kitchen towel around it!
However, cost of secondhand one .....£510 incl gaskets (the original never used gaskets!!)
I bought a tin of heat stuff to repair a cast manifold as removing the manifold will need to wait until I find a tin opener to open the can of worms.
And to think I sold a RAV4 3 door for £600...should have kept it!
Welding cast ? Any ideas? If I could fix my own, I could sell the one I've just bought at a profit as it seems to be one of the last remaining spares!!
Have you a photo of where the crack is on the manifold Bothy? Welding CI is quite possible if the correct procedure is used. It may well need the face of the manifold skimming after welding but again, that is not a problem.
My experience from my motor trade days,(mainly Ford Fiesta and pinto manifolds). yes you can weld cast iron but the crack needs to be Vee’d out deeply and do it on the engine so the manifold doesn’t distort while you weld it. If you weld it off the vehicle is will distort and never seal back on the head . If it has to come off vehicle to be welded, bolt it to solid metal like an beam..then weld..might not be textbook but it worked for me 👍🏻
Have to say I welded the son's Ford diesel manifold just before it went into the turbo, he ran it for 6 months after that before he sold it, no idea how much longer after that it survived. If it's scrap anyway & easy to get off/on got to be worth a go, if it fails you've only lost a bit of time.
