The TTE exhaust seems to stick out a long way...wonder if it was off a 5 door model, or the tailgate is pushed in at the bottom ?

If you go on Autotrader and filter Automatic, Petrol and 3 doors. Six come up, a couple of imports because they have the funny wing mirror on the passenger front wing.
Still can't get over the prices !!!!
And yes, something not right about that TTE exhaust, I had one on my 5 door 4.2 gen and it never stuck out that far !!!

Think I need a reality check ! Have been making enquiries about a few 3 door RAV4’s and although the dealers big them up in their adverts, once I ask for more details photo’s the truth become apparent 🤔
The RAV4 by design was a utility vehicle and as such was used for such a job, should I expect to find a 16 year old + example that has no bumps and scrapes around the bodywork , or should I see it as a project and will need bodywork ?
Last vehicle i enquired about was up for 5k ...sensible mileage and looked tidy in the photo’s, on closer inspection , rear 1/4 bumper creased , flared are pulled away, front arch as long scuff etc
I know the automatic commands top money but the dealer seem to want the money without doing any of the work .
Yes I know I’m fussy ..I guess other buys might just except it’s wear and tear on an old vehicle .

There are clean ones out there (we've bought 3 three doors over the years, all very tidy) but as time goes on, they will become rarer. Personally, like you, I want the car to be mechanically sound, have a genuine FSH, and present the bodywork well. I won't entertain damaged bodywork but replacing plastics wouldn't put me off as long as the bits are still available and I can be convinced that the damage isn't hiding some major issue. The fewer previous owners, the better and if you can speak to the last owner, all the better. From my experience the 4.2 is more robust than most cars, so a project might not be as daunting as with other vehicles, if you're inclined that way.😀 |

Also they do seem to be very well screwed together and they certainly don't have any problem areas of note (apart from the gearbox ECU on the early 4.2s). And I have never found corrosion on any of ours, anywhere! I have only suffered one breakdown across five 4.2s that I've owned since 2002; that was a snapped serpentine belt - hardly a major issue. You say that they have no major offroad ability: true, they don't have Land Rover's all-singing and all-dancing Terrain Response bollocks but that only adds to LR's woeful reliability. A friend of mine went on one of those off-road adventure tours in Egypt some years back. He was initially a little annoyed that he and his wife were allocated a 4.2 instead of the LRs and Jeeps that others on the tour had. He told me that he was soon glad that he had one of the RAVs because they just got on with everything whilst the LRs and Jeeps did what they do best - broke down or, surprisingly, got stuck in various sand dunes, waddies, etc. I have off-roaded several of ours over the years, mainly delivering my daughter to remote horsey locations in Lancs and the Lakes and they performed fine.
The one you have posted doesn't look too bad and its MoT history has no major issues, just tyres and wipers, etc. What is your concern about it?

Front wheel arch scuffed, rear 1/4 bumper creased at the top and nsr arch loose , wheels need refurbishing and brake look like they’ve sat in the sea for a month . They guy said he would deliver as I can’t go look at it but just a bit suspicious. I wanted photos of the underside but he’s not got back to be for a day or two .

I had ( old ) Land Rovers for 20 years Jim and got very complacent about the off-road and slippery road capability. The RAV marked retirement and no longer needing to travel fields and moorland tracks for work. I'd not had it long when we had a sudden deep snow one February afternoon. I ended up doing a rescue job for 2 teachers and a pupil at our local school and set off with some trepidation. The RAV tackled 200mm snow on 1:4 hills, up and down, with what I can only describe as indifference. The traction control more than made up for the lack of a low-box and the steering, well it just bl00dy did it with no excitement at all. A bit more ground clearance might be handy off road but if you pick your route carefully, I'd put it up against the LR any day. Having said all that, I never had a single breakdown in the 88, 108 or 90 in 20 years. The Disco was a different matter - 3 gearboxes in 100k! |

I admit that I have a real downer on Freelancers, Discos and all RRs mainly because of their appalling reliability. My daughter had a Freelander a few years back and it was the singularly worst vehicle I had ever been associated with. It was a money pit; it finally went after having to be bodged into 2wd just to make it sellable. I accept that the traditional LRs are more robust but are absolutely horrible to travel in. |

My current thoughts really make no sense at all as I don’t need another car after the sale of my Lexus SC430 . I’ve been studying Auto trader and can feel a 3 door RAV4 calling me again 😎 Needs to be an inexpensive vehicle I can put my own stamp on , has to be an Auto 3 door and don’t mind if a NRG, XT3 or XT-R but only a NRG is likely to be cheap ! I’ve alway had a soft spot for the light blue and silver NRG but mindful of the possible gearbox issues and has no easy cruise control add on . would like a more positive outcome of this Coronavirus before purchasing but do keep your eyes out for me guys 👍🏻 Cheap and 3 door auto don’t go together.. |

Whether the spare tyre has been used if original it will need replacing at that age.
I do like the proportions of the 3 door and I would only go for an auto these days. I doubt I would part with 5k for that age car but maybe that's where I go wrong and pay for a newer car and lose 5k in depreciation instead!

I can't seem to get any magnification on the photos, Bob, but aren't the body blemishes things that you can have the dealer sort out as part of the deal? Probably not the wheel refurb but we all know that Jap alloys tend to be crap and ypu just allow for refurb every so often. Looking at the N/S/R bumper, are you sure it's a crease and not a reflection of the bodywork below the tail-light? Certainly, the underside needs a view if you suspect that the brakes show serious corrosion. Mind you, a car doesn't have to stand for very long before you get surface rust on the discs. Ours are covered in it the day after washing!
