Just bought rav4 xt3vvti 54 plate 110thou miles. 4wd seems to work but vsc/trc lights don't come on when ign. key switched on as it says in the book. Any suggestions please. Or have I bought an expensive pup? thanks

Or have I bought an expensive pup? thanks First, welcome! You need a response from someone more knowledgeable than me but to give them something to shoot at ... If fitted, the lights should come on briefly with the ignition key. The most obvious reason for them not doing so would be that the bulbs have failed or that there is a fault in the circuitry ... which of itself may be nothing too much to worry about. As I understand, changes to the MOT rules are starting to make faults with warning systems a reason for failure ... I can't see that it applies to these warning lamps (yet) though I may not have looked hard enough. The obvious concern is that there is a fault and an unscrupulous individual has 'fixed' the warning lights in preference to fixing the fault!!!  So, if you intend to keep the car, you need to know the truth behind the situation either by reading any stored errors or taking the car into a Toyota dealer or competent garage to have them diagnose the situation for you. |

I've never owned a 4.2 and was taking the OPs word that the VSC/TRC warning light should be there. I can't find User Manuals for UK spec cars of that vintage online - I might not be looking in the right place - but looking at User Manuals for US/Canada models there is a VSC/TRC warning light on a 2004 model year car but not on a 2003 model year car. So, as you say, there is a distinct possibly that there is no VSC/TRC warning light to illuminate in the first place ... [Edit: Ash has the VSC/TRC warning light on his 2005 RAV 4.2 ... I knew I'd seen it somewhere recently ...  ] |

I am pretty sure the Facelifted RAV4.2 (2003-2006 model) did not have any VSC or Traction Control system. I do understand the first RAV4.2 (2000-2003) DID have some kind of VSC system, but got removed in the update. This could add some confusion of what to expect. (I am happy to be corrected on the above, but certainly never recall seeing a VSC light on either my 2005 Manual VVT-i or my 2004 Auto VVT-i) Interesting Ash had one on his RAV4.2 - definatly on the facelift model he has and not on the older 4.2 he had previously? |

Just a thought, is it on the ‘XTR’ ? Mine is an XT3.
I’m sure I have read that the XTR has ‘traction control’ ?
