I think modern oil is responsible for not needing flushing. They don’t congeal like they used to do and they have detergents to keep the engine clean. They have dispersants to keep dirt in suspension.

In a lot of cases, you have to go underneath to get at the filter. I once did a Rover 75 and it had a huge steel tray on which every bolt snapped off. It had a BMW engine with the filter at the top and if I’d had a pump which I didn’t it might have saved me most of a day’s work. Thankfully, RAVs and CX-5s have very sensibly positioned access holes for simplified oil changes. Road rockets the same. Dead easy to change the oil and filter and it runs on fumes. Did I ever mention that ??
