WINTER TYRES FOR NORMAL USE.....?

PostPosted by Big Kev » Sat Aug 26, 2017 8:03 pm

MOT last Thursday.....usual boring Rav stuff.....passed nae bother.....no advisories.......

Mileage covered in the last year.....? 5300 miles ffs......

Makes me ask this question, mins.......if I continue to do such a low annual mileage, why not run ALL BLIDDY YEAR on Winter tyres such as Yokohama "W" Drive boots which I rate very highfully from personal experience.....? As some of youz may know, I have emigrated to eastern Invernessity, now residing on the Moray Coast. It is renowned up here for being unusually mild as long as the Gulf Stream stays seasonally where it should stay......when did that last happen......? However it can be mild and WET, then cauld and wet in winter, with little snow because of sea proximity. We are, however, a mere stone's throw from likes of Aviemore so could go and play there.

Your opinions please......? Daft idea....? Non fuel efficient NOT a consideration unless massive difference. Just LOVE the grip and silence they convey.
"Nobody knows where my Johnnie has gone"........why sing about a missing condom....?

My opinion ... just leave them on. No real difference I guess to leaving "normal" tyres on over winter, except the other way round (and when you REALLY need tyre performance, it is usually the winter anyway)

I ran Vredestien Wintracs all year round on my T180'and gotnincredible mileage out of them. They still had good useable tread when I sold the wheels and tyres.

They were quiet ... Fuel efficiency was betterer than the Bridgestones and they gave a far comfier ride.

Kev I'm on Vredestien Quatracs now because they are a combination of both worlds and are SUPER quiet SUPER comfortable and absolutely suited to heavy rain and cold roads. Plus not expensive for a premium tyre.

I have gone for Michelin Cross Climate tyres on the CRV and they seem fine. I think the fuel mpg has increased from about 27 to 29 mpg but early days to be confident that is real. They are quieter than previous tyres and grip well.

I would imagine the Mitchelins are a brilliant tyre. I go a Vredestien cos I've used them on everything from runaround ( both IQs are on them) to high performance cars. :s_thumbsup

Haven't got round to removing winters this year as Toyota [NOT dealer I might add] took nearly three months to remedy an air-con issue with my RAV [had to buy something else to have fresh air in the cabin no less] Consequently RAV has hardly been driven over the summer.
Winters will stay on now until too far gone to be effective - they are approaching use by date.
The winters [Dunlop something or other] are great in the wet though they do generate a bit of noise compared to my preferred Yoko's.
Personally, if I were in your position Kev, I would do same. Use up the winterers before they go off [and they're likely too at the mileage you do -
unless your whisky shop is on t'other side of the highlands] and then get some Cross climates or the like.

The Michies are the only purpose designed winter and summer tyre I think. Wasn't brain using them?

Quatracs are to young Donald.. I believe there are a few of the dual climate tyres now. When you look at the Quatracs they look far more like winters than summers.

I really believe any of the top brands will be absolutely spot on ! It comes down to brand preference. :s_thumbsup
