Rattling gear stick

PostPosted by NickB75 » Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:56 am

My Rav seems to have developed this annoying rattle from the gearstick,it's not violently shaking or anything just vibration that causes a loud rattle.
This is only apparent when in neutral,if I nudge the stick slightly it usually stops, until the next time it's in neutral.
Do you think this would be linkage? Also would it warrant a visit to Toyota? I have a Toyota Warranty but not sure how good these things are.
I changed the gearbox oil recently but the rattle was there before doing that. Changing the oil made no difference to how car drives, but it was reassuring to see how clean the oil was that came out of the box.

If it were me , id be tempted to take apart some of the trim on the center console to look at the joint under the gearstick.

Pry off the mettalic section under the gaitor , see what I can find

Possibly a weak detent spring?
Mine has developed an annoying 'click' sometimes when pulling the stick back from 1st, 3rd or 5th gears. Traced it to the reverse collar. Only does it if light grip on stick.
Need to do as Jamie has suggested and have a looksee under the gaiter [I have a genuine leather gaiter that I fitted way back so possibly something related to that in my case]

Yeah thanks for your replies ,I was thinking I'd have a look under there at the weekend, the car didn't do it today.
It's another one of my cars weird issues, that seem to come and go.
It does sound like plastic or metal resonating within the shifter assembly.
I'll report back if I find anything, BTW any tips for removing the gator/surround?

I purchased a set of trim removal pliers from Amazon, only a few quid.
Draper 28819 Automotive Trim Removal Pliers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00E8GM6XQ/ ... MzbN1GD2SP

Just slide slim skinny jaws under trim, squeeze and ' pop ' ...
If you're lucky :Y

Just tape the jaws to avoid trim damage
If you can find a ' pdf' on that console build itd help you.
