Extended Warranties

PostPosted by northern_lad » Wed Aug 16, 2017 10:22 am

Searching online for the price of Toyota extended warranties when I came across 2 BOGOF offers from Inchcape Toyota and Vantage Toyota both priced at £516 for year one with second year free.

Never had an extended warranty before so :-

Is the price reasonable
Will it be national
If not national will I be able to use it my local dealer
My warranty runs out in April so will I be able to tag this on to the end if I bought now.

£516 seem a good price for 2 years.
The warranty is national, but taken out with a dealer (you need to service your car with a dealer). You could go to your dealer and say you have a warranty offer, will you match...
I am not sure how long in advance, but you could do something like this. April seem to be a long time, so not sure - you will need to ask the dealer.

Warranty itself is very good. Make sure It is a Toyota warranty and not anyone else, as others are not that good.

I am a bit of a fan of the Toyota Warranty as they don't (at least when I took it out) list what is included, but they list what is excluded, so if it is not listed and is not generally acknowledged as a wear and tear item, they will fix it for free. The cover also usually includes Toyota breakdown assistance for the warranty period and from memory, if you buy the extended warranty, the breakdown cover starts immediately if there is no gap between it and the standard warranty.

£258 a year is not too bad a price. You are of course buying peace of mind, same as any warranty or insurance product, but nowadays seems any repair on a car runs into 3 figures minimum no matter how minor.

Just had over 3K worth of warranty repair to my RAV [major aircon fault]at the limit of the extended warranty and at end of nine years ownership. Would I pay for a further Toyota extended warranty? You bet, but I can't as mileage now too high.

you can buy limited and unlimited mileage warranties, but the vehicles have to be within a certain mileage (and age) limit at the time you buy them.

I think this is what high-mileage drivers had to do when they bought their vehicles before Toyota brought out their 5-Year warranty? the first 2 years were unlimited miles, but the 3rd year was actually limited to 60k total miles, so you would take out say a 5 year warranty top up with unlimited miles plan (I think it was only £20 or so more?)

It could be good planning to leave it for NEARLY a year and buy extended warranty a few days before the vehicles anniversary to get about a year past the max age limit (unless the warranty literally stops when it hits the age limit?)

As far as a Toyota Extended Warranty, it's a no brainier and worth the cost, if you can afford it.

My car hits 100k miles at it's next service this month and it's a full service, so not cheap, after that, it's fingers crossed, as I'll be on my own.

After this service, I'm still going to get it serviced at Toyota, but I'll be getting the Toyota Essential Services, much cheaper.

Previously (with the Avensis) there was 3 years 60K limit. I have renewed the warranty a few month before the anniversary, as I was close to 60K, and they gave me the couple of month between me passing 60K and the start of the extended warranty (unlimited mileage). That was for two years. When I came to the renewal of that one, they refused to renew it for two years, only for one year, but the car had way more than 100K by then... I had it for 2 years without the warranty...
I hoped they will do something similar with this one... just hope I can control the mileage...

I was looking into extended warranty for my car and found the exact same offer from Toyota - £516 for the next 30,000 miles or 24 months whichever came sooner which would do me very nicely since my annual mileage is now likely to be well under 15,000 pa. It's not dealer specific in the sense that it is available from Toyota UK so while you may well buy it from your local dealer you can have the warranty work carried out by any Toyota dealer in the UK.

And then I searched for an found this thread ...

Warrantywise would offer me a similar level of cover for around £850 pa (OK, that's probably unlimited mileage but ... ) making the Toyota offer look very good value.

And only then did I realise that by simple arithmetic the 5yr (100,000 mile) warranty on my car doesn't expire until next year so my search is a little premature! Doh!
:s_scratchhead
But Toyota know this and the start date of the extended warranty offer on my car is 6/10/2018. So, unless I decide on a change within the next twelve months, I shall very probably take them up on this offer ...

So [belated] answers to Keith's questions would appear to be:
