Gearbox oil

PostPosted by NickB75 » Tue Jul 11, 2017 8:05 pm

I was wondering if someone could recommend gearbox oil for my RAV4.
My gearbox is very clunky and occasionally crunchy between 1st and 2nd. I'm not too concerned about that as I know it's quite common. I've also driven another RAV4 of similar age and that was clunky too.
I would however like to make it a little easier to shift gears if possible.
I understand I need GL5 spec and 75W, I can only find 75W 80 GL5. I would like to know what others have used in their gearboxes.
Thanks in advance

I've never found a suitable replacement for the genuine stuff. I did try 75W/80 once and it worked fine until the cold weather came and had to put both feet on the dash to change gear. Trust me, go to a Toyota dealer and barter for the genuine stuff.

Ok thankyou for the reply,if that's the case would I find any benefit in changing it?
The car's done 60k but I'm assuming short journeys looking at the history.
I'll maybe put this on hold, I'm fortunate as I've Access to proper car lift,so a DIY job,so just a case of getting the pukka Toyota oil at a sensible price

Might be a placebo effect but yes, many report an improvement after changing the oil.
