2005 Rav4 Diesel - Loss of Power - COLD

PostPosted by rav4jay » Tue Jun 20, 2017 11:01 am

Hi

Been having lots of fun..not, with our RAV losing power.
thought I had it sorted as it run for about 2 full tanks perfectly when filled with Shell V-Power Diesel...
but its come back with a vengeance now...

had the fuel filter replaced, cleaned MAF and EGR (through inlet whilst engine running).

It now seems to only happen when cold (in the morning), once warmed up the car seems fine for the rest of the day with only the slightest issue sometimes.
when cold (for the first 20 mins) - its nearly undriveable - all through the gears - no power whatsoever.
Before, it was only doing about 70mph on the motorway when you hit 5th gear and it sort of dies - never dies completely just slows down.

As it seems to be only when cold at moment, do you have an idea where I can start looking please?
I was thinking MAP sensor? but A. Not sure where this is located, B. Not sure if this affects cold running.

Cheers

These 4.2s are a pain when they start playing up. Does it show any fault codes?

Invariably it comes back to SCVs or turbo.

Thanks.. No fault codes... About ready to sell this for spares now!!!
It's so intermittent.. It died when warm earlier on! It's dangerous on the road as you never know when power is going to die...

I read about the scvs and may replace these.. If it's turbo it's going to the great scrapyard in the sky

Cheers

Sorted :)

Firstly - removed and cleaned the MAF again, then decided to remove clean the VSV and EGR Properly.
Removed the EGR and when I tried undoing the 3 bolts that hold the electrical plunger to the top one sheared straight off - not happy - had to redrill out and fit a different bolt.
BUT
Bought some EGR cleaner and made a good job of it.

Pulled off the drive and same problem - I was not a happy bunny...
Anyway, went and got some diesel (Shell V-Power) and literally after a mile of petrol station I got the Engine Light - Code P0627 (I think - it was fuel pump related anyhoo)
First time I have ever had the engine light come on so I had thought I had done something wrong...

Anyhoo, to cut a long story shorter again...
Bonnet up, moved engine coolatn tank, intercooler hose and saw the 2 SCV's
Removed both electrical plugs.
Managed after losing 2 knuckles, to remove the red one.
decided against removing the Green one as there was no way in hell I could get my hands round down there.
Cleaned the red with some carb cleaner - re-oiled rings, and sprayed some electrical contact cleaner on the spades and connectors before refitting ... Just praying its the red at fault and not the green....

Pulled off the driveway (again) and lo an behold - full power :)
Went for a drive round and its not been this good for months....
Not a single hiccup - like a new car now - just hoping it stays this way...

Thanks for your advice Anchorman.

Rav has died again - didnt last long but long enought to prove that what I done worked...
so now going to order the 2 scv's

does anyone have the correct part number for the scv kit for a 2005 d4d Diesel please?
Is it ? 04221-27011?
Or do you have the seperate valve numbers and I may be able to save som emoney by ordering seperately.
