My 'new' Rav playing up with Starting!

PostPosted by Paddytra » Fri Jun 02, 2017 2:42 pm

Hello All.

Just had to have a wee gripe.
As I said in my Hello I noticed that my Rav was slow to start well it got progressively worse over the first week of driving it and so I sent it back to where I bought it as I had a three month warranty.

So since Tuesday I have had no word from the guy, and when I rung him yesterday he said they were only then taking out the Injectors as the suspected cause of the starting issue. The they would have to be tested etc........

So Can anyone tell me how long should I expect to wait on this?

Are the Injectors a likely cause of Slow Starting? (The Car just had full service Oil, Air Fuel Filters and Had the Glow Plugs Replaced)

It actually started every time I tried it just took about 5-10 seconds of Churning!

I noticed when changing the Air Filter that there was a small amount of oil in the Air Intake at the Turbo. I checked the IC and there was only a very small amount of oil in it.

I really don't want to get the car back from the guy (independent dealer) unless its totally fixed so any ideas would be appreciated!

You may well have the ' hot starting issue ' that d4d's had , my old 2002 had it badly.
I fitted the biggest CCA battery I could find...
It helped but didn't cure it by any means.
Lifes too short.

Work to live , Not live to work..

Previous vehicle , 2002 3dr Baleric blue D4D Rav4.
Then 2014 Honda Jazz EX 1.4
Now ,2012 Rav4 XT-R 2.2 D4D....brilliant.

By slow starting do you mean it turns over slowly or it takes a long time cranking it over to start ?

Doesn't seem to matter Hot or Cold its just really slow to start.

It takes a long time cranking to start. So far it has always started.........eventually!

Still haven't heard anymore from the dealer yet.

Before trying, pump that black plunger on top of the fuel filter until it goes stiff then see if it starts any better.

Sorry for the delay in replying!

priming the fuel pump didn't make any difference!

I got the car back on Monday eveing and on Tuesday the staring issue was the same, and when put under pressure -(pulling away into traffic) there was a distinct hesitation from the car.
I got the guy to come and collect the car .. again.

So the first time he told me that there was an issue with the Injectors and that he replaced three of them.

now he has said that he is going to replace the SCV valves but that he wont get them til Monday. :s_cry

Am I flogging a dead horse? Should I just demand my money back or is it likely that this will sort out this Rav?

Why not see if the SCVs sort it and then if not get your money back.

Not a lawyer but you have to allow the garage to make reasonable attempts to repair the vehicle before you can demand your money back, problem is I don't think there is a hard & fast rule on what reasonable is.

I would suggest when you take it back agree a timeframe to have a totally sorted vehicle and you can reject and money back if not met.
Also if you have a limited time warranty of say 3 months that that is either extended or the clock reset when you get back your fixed car (after all, you expected a working vehicle from day 1, not day 20,30 or whatever ends up being)
