Oil oil OIL

Ok, oilites ....what to get?

My new motor apparently requires 505 oil (I think specifically probably VW 505.02?).

EURO CAR PARTS seems pretty poor in revealing what the oil spec is for any of the loads of oils that get listed when I put the reg in. I am more believing of the list from OPIEOILS when I type in "VW 505.01" in the search box (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/search/go?w=vw%20505.01) but which one to get?
Cheapest as all supposedly meet the spec I presume? 5W30? 5W40? 0W30? Which one is best option?
Want to get the best oil for engine protection obviously so saving £10-£20 over a year on oil is neither here nor there.

When we had our first T4 in 1999 that also needed the 505 spec....seemed quite common to find.. think I might have used halford to buy Mobil 1 or Castrol .
Check out halfords oil checker using reg number :s_thumbsup

It's 5W40 fully synthetic.

Changing from that viscosity could be a bad move. Ultra modern engines require the low Vis 0 rated or at least its recommended bit the engine in your wagon requires the viscosity it was designed for. I would go for a very high quality brand and stick with what is supposed to have.

I've been using 5w40 mobil fully synthetic for diesels from Costco. I thought I was giving it a better oil than the semi synthetic that Toyota supply.
Is this likely to have done the car any harm? Should I revert to the correct recommended viscosity?
I think it's going soon anyway.

I have never seen 5w40 specified for ANY RAV4.

That's what worries me. Is the correct viscosity that crucial that I should change it?

On the subject of oil, my Rav's gone now (to a good home fortunately) and I should be picking up my new Sorento today or tomorrow.
I've found a decent Kia Owners Club Forum and the Sorento has 20,000 miles or 12 months service intervals.
If you take it in for the first service with only 10,000 on the clock, they don't change the oil!
No wonder I got a three year servicing package thrown in for free - it's not going to cost the garage very much to service the car!
If you do request an oil change, you have to stump up about £100.
I'll be taking it in for my freebie service, then taking it to an independent to do the oil and filter - I know one that will only charge me half an hour's labour and I provide the oil and a Kia filter.
