Update on Exhausting Topic

PostPosted by Big Kev » Wed May 17, 2017 3:30 pm

As some members already know, I have wife's Three Door Rav booked in at specialist exhaust chappie next week, the same guys who fitted the TTE Rear Silencer with twin tailpipes. I came up with an idea ALL ON MY OWNSOME for wanst.....

As originally reported, the 14 year old exhaust is akin to a withered auld tree........whose bark is the only thing holding it together. The Catalyser, however, having only doned 50k miles, is looking bliddy fine, so I suggested......

They cut oot the Catalyser and renew the pipe itself, only after which Arnie Toyota admitted they have had same guys do same thing for customers who baulk at the joke of a Toyota replacement price including Cat.

It is booked in next Thursday as these guys are mega busy, and I will opt for stainless in the hope that welding Stainless to Stainless will "take" better than stainless to mild steel.....anyone wishing to contracept, please do prior to next Thursday. Remember also we are off to live at the shoresea, and based on what I saw at Kwik Fit of the exhaust, it really is a matter of time before it goes boobs north.
Also love referring to Kwik Fit as often as possible coz it makes Don ill........lol.

Can't get better than a stainless to stainless weld, better than a stainless to rust weld :s_thumbsup

Though Charlie had an all stainless exhaust and got rid of it due to boomy noise IIRC.

I think it was that big centre box on the T180 that caused the bloody awful resonance. They are renown for doing it but the 1100 odd quid made me do it. Ended up costing me about 1500 quid by the time it was binned and a standard one put back on.... It was on the motorway where that car was most of the time that the noise was at its worst. May not have been an issue if the car had been used locally. Never again for me though.

If I'm not mistaken ...the catalyst converter (pair ) are fitted in the downpipe so the box further down the exhaust is just a muffler.....so when you speak of cutting the Cat out is that the muffler halfway down the exhaust ?

Catalyst converter shown here.....

Well unless I'm talking out my ass and they have a third cat fitted but im sure they don't !

Isn't there a 3rd one called an oxidisation catalyst or something like that ?

There is what is termed the "Underfloor" catalyser on Funnerburd Too, Bob, so that link you sent me showing a silencer on the centre section of the exhaust could be really misleading. Towards the very rear there is a wee swollen area of a bottle size which I presume to be some kind of slencer.
It will make little or no difference to noise, but maybe resonance slightly, to choose stainless, as the rear silencer is really the bit that does exactly that......silences.
Not sure if there are any supplementary or primary catalysers on the doon pipe at front though.......?
