Yeah, I thought all the 4 wheel drive versions of the mkI were permanent 4 wheel drive, and the button just locked the diff.

I don't think Toyota made a Rav4 that had a manual change ( but could be wrong ) .

First ( all ? ) switchable versions of it, it automatically changed from 2wd to 4wd depending on sensors. . .

As said above button on dash is a centre diff lock which only the manual gearbox model had, also permanent four wheel drive :s_thumbsup

I informed the seller, and she's removed that from the auction description. Her excuse was "I'm just a girl - we don't know those sort of things" :D

Anyway, has she been motoring about on normal roads / conditions, while having the diff locked, I wonder? This might lead to problems, me thinks.

Does the diff lock on the mk1, automatically disengage above a certain speed ?

I know it does on the later models. .

No, you have to disengage it with the switch but as it's vacuum operated, a buzzer sounds until it disengages in case it hangs in gear. It sometimes requires a little touch of reverse to free it up.
