RAV4.2 Petrol After ignition power connection

PostPosted by widge » Tue Apr 25, 2017 10:16 am

Hi
I am currently fitting a module to allow me to use E85 ethanol on my 2005 4.2 XT3, I am fitting the module on top of the fuse box on the right hand side of the engine compartment. but I need to connect the power to an after ignition 12v supply and wondered if anyone had an easy suggestion of where to connect it, you would think that being right by the fusebox it would be easy but everything is hidden away in trunking.
Cheers

Are we talking live 12v supply ? The battery may have some spare connector on its fusible link panel, its on the positive battery terminal .

Hi
Yes we are talking about a 12v supply but it has to only be live when the ignition switch is on, I could possibly run a cable back to the ignition switch its self but would rather connect it more locally, I have tried accessing behind the Fuse panel, I can unplug the fuse panel itself but cannot work out how to access the connections underneath.

So you're after an ignition only live feed, must be something inthe fuse box your working at, can you unbolt it and look from underneath ?

Hi
I did manage to work out how to remove the fuse panel, it unplugs revealing an assembly with several multi-way connectors in two plastic mouldings underneath, I then managed to lift the connector assembly's, but the problem is the wiring looms are so tight and then disappear into plastic conduit it is very difficult to work out what wire is what without a detailed wiring diagram, let alone tap into one, so I think I will probably have to go back to square one and run a cable from the ignition switch.

Unfortunately I have now installed a set of push pull hand controls (necessary for my wife) which I am going to have to take apart so I can gain access to the steering column, unless anyone can think of an alternative with easier access.

Still with E85 Ethanol at 0.69€/litre compared with 1.44€/litre the hassle should be worth it in the end, I am documenting the installation and when I have some fuel consumption figures after I have run it for a few weeks I will post something.

Thanks for any help

How about taking a feed from the cigarette lighter socket, that's ignition controlled and must be easier to get to than the ignition switch.. ;)

Hi
Thanks for the suggestion, I had thought of that myself but the cigarette lighter also comes on along with the radio etc when you just turn the ignition switch to its first auxiliary position, but it probably wouldn't harm to connect it to that as I very rarely use that position.

It seems we have nobody else here who can read a wiring diagram. ;)

Try the IG2 relay. See attached. Pin3 (connector 1D pin 3) or if you want to take it from the coil side, pin 1(connector 1G pin 12).
