Drove to Stockton-on-Tees on Friday - 200+ mile round trip no problem
Started journey to drive back there the next morning to finish up what I was doing and about 25 miles into the trip suddenly heard this loud noise. I was just slowing down to wait for the car in front to turn right and as they did so I thought to myself "their exhaust is really blowing". But .... the noise stayed with me!
After a few miles of seeing if I could work it out (different gears, revs, coasting, etc) I pulled over and lifted the bonnet.
Lots of noise from by the airbox. Thought maybe the exhaust manifold blown? Didn't like the sound of it, or the prospect of doing another 170 miles (stockton and back home) so turned round and headed home. Dropped into a Tyre & Exhaust place on the way which I knew was a few miles up the road and they listened and said "dunno, but not the exhaust".
Back home, decided to call the RAC as have full coverage with home start and see what they think ....
Attached is the report they emailed me the next morning....
RAC-T5.jpg

The engine seemed down on power (maybe only 4 out of 5 cylinders operating right?) but was not horrendously slow or in any kind of limp mode.

Anyone knows these VW 5-Pot engines and what kind of repair is likely to be needed (from one extreme to other)? I will be getting it collected on Monday Afternoon hopefully and taken to a local garage which has done work for me before (Clutch and DMF on this one, Timing belt on previous T4) and I think they will know what they are doing and their charges have always been reasonable, but not sure how I will know what they are telling me is needed IS needed (little suspiscious of all garages TBH  )

Sounds like a valve, head gasket gone between 2 cylinders or a cam problem Hoov. It has to go in for surgery I’m afraid.

Went to garage today ... not really looked at it yet.
While I would like it back as have some projects lined up for it, not actually needing the van this month so not a major problem but told them they need to get on the case this week in case any parts needed take time to source

Call from garage .... they can't work on it as a more complicated design then they have tools for  Wish they told me that to start with!
Going to now be taken to a Specialist engine company fairly local whose business is engine building/rebuilding/servicing, but they can't look at it until 2nd week in May so a right pain, but don't really have any real alternative as this design of engine is known to be very complex so the only other place is the VW Commercials main dealer and would end up paying retail price for parts and £100/hour to diagnose and fit, so that would be very expensive :( (going to cost enough as it is :s_cry )

At least the place who WILL be fixing it (I hope!) is doing stuff which is their bread and butter and so know exactly what they are doing (I hope!!). Will maybe be anopportunity for them to deal with anything else which might be worth doing while the head, etc is off for longevity?

New Camshaft on order. current one is badly worn .

When I did a search when problem appeared, a camshaft fault came up as a likely cause. I suppose at 175,000 miles it has done a lot of work, so while I would prefer it not to have happened, I am not massively upset or annoyed about it.
