Lighting project.

PostPosted by Rambler » Fri Dec 09, 2016 11:17 am

Am going to make a frame for some additional lighting just above the reg plate.
Hopefully four PIAA black round driving lights mounted on a home made frame.
Going to try and use the reg plate fixings, work up and through front grille onto the cars frame behind the grille for strength and support.
Got the idea from a Tacoma truck at the Sema 2015 show.
Quite big gaps in the front grille so should be farely easy....

Will be following your progress - i've always liked lights!

I've been considering using my A-Bar as the mount and sticking one of those LED light bars to it - i reckon it could look OEM+ if done correctly :s_cool

As a 2012 i think youre front is different to mine but you can get the A bars still - about £300 i think?

something like this maybe

....

Just a note on your A-bar as a mount comment...
The A-bar (or Nudge Bar I think Toyota call it?) does not have any rigidity to it. When I fitted the official (small) Toyota Spot Lights to my RAV4.2, I needed to drill through the Nudge Bar AND the Bumper itself to provide a firm support. For an LED light bar you might be ok attaching that way (could be a neat way to do it, using Rivnuts as a good securing base and eliminate need to strip down) but the traditional PIAA or CIBIE spots would be another matter.

I'm hoping to create a decent support system behind and then through the grille.
Its got to be strong and rigid ! So the lights don't vibrate.

Its going to take a bit of thought to do it ; but i don't want anything chunky or messy on show.
Just a row of 4 lights tight together with minimal mess.
But i may also add a short light bar beneath them too.
I'll be looking in B&q etc for steel roding or angle iron to make it with.
Just need to work out how to remove the grille first ;)

I found this light bar when thinking of putting extra lights on mine..

They do a three light version as well...

You have to take the bumper off because there is stuff that needs to go behind it...

Will find the details if interested... HTH..

Please liz , it may well help :s_thumbsup
Aiming to mount mine just a little higher than that, but i could mount a longer bar on the one in the picture to give me enough room for four lights.
I'm not keen on bumper removal tbh , but it may help knowing whats behind it if i want to secure some metal work.

Just thinking, securing steel work....
Possibly in places difficult to get to , welding....probably not :s_no
Bolts, a pain to get to from both sides.
On my old 4.2 roof lights , 10mm bolts with aluminium 25mm square tube and won't rust.
Solid and seriously strong , now....behind the grille....something similar , hmm....my minds thinking ;)

Don't want to ruin your plans, but is there any consideration towards pedestrian safety needed (i.e. Hitting them with your "rigid" bar. I know there'll be a car just behind the bar, but just a thought!)

Daves are everywhere. Some say you're never more than 10 feet from a Dave.

Thats been going through my mind too , MOT etc , i need to keep all the frame behind the grille for safety, and the light mounts protruding through the grille just enough.
I may not need reg plate supports if i can make it strong enough from behind the grille.
Hopefully nothing apart from the lights will be further forward than the reg plate :s_thumbsup

Its why i need to get that grille off first , see what i can
see then work from there , measurements, mountings etc.
:s_yes
