New Forum Style for Mobiles now released

PostPosted by Hoovie » Thu Dec 08, 2016 4:11 pm

One of the limitations of our forum is that on a mobile device it can be hard to see, and the most mobile-friendly style we had is pretty clunky when used on a PC :s_no

But now we have a better solution! :s_yahoo

Introducing "Comboot", our new Responsive Forum Style that members who primarly use Mobile Devices should try, but is still very effective on a full-sized computer screen :s_thumbsup

This is a screenshot from my PC of the forum when running Comboot...

If you view this on a Mobile Phone Screen, it will look similar, but tuned for the smaller screen (hence the term 'Responsive').

How do you select this? It is very simple and the "how to" is explained here ... Changing Forum Styles from your Control Panel

The following part covers how to change once you are in Comboot if you want to change to another one ...

Firstly, click on the User Icon
On a PC, the User Icon looks like this: Image
On a Mobile, it is just a Head: Image

and select "Control Panel" from the options
Image

Once in Control Panel, select "Board Preferences" (shown as 2 here) and then choose the Style wanted in 'My board style:" (3)

The new style is listed as "- RESPONSIVE - Comboot" :s_thumbsup

Have a go and see what you think. I will be interested in your feedback on this style. If you do feedback, please also provide the device you are using and the version of OS if you know it (so for example not just Android, but Android kit-kat or lollipop, if possible)
:s_howdy

Seems ok on iPad, had no problem with previous settings though.

I tried it on an iPad with iOS 10.1.1.

Didn't like it at all and have gone back!

Before each post I had information about the member and for me it broke up the flow of the posts. Maybe useful on a phone but I rarely use mine!

I'm poor so only have iPad 3 with IOS 9.5 just takes time getting used to but don't really see the need to change. Never use my android Samsung to surf the net so perhaps I'm missing something :s_yes

tablets like iPads have screen resolutions far more akin to standard PCs.
It is people who use mobile phones and 'phablets' where a Responsive template can make a difference :)

I've just converted this on my Google Pixel phone, far clearer and easier to read, just have to get used to the new layout.

Will convert my tablet later. :s_thumbsup

Good Stuff.
We don't detect the device and switch screen formats accordingly, so you will see the new layout automatically when you use the Tablet.

I will admit I don't use my mobile much on the forum, but that is partly as it was hard to do so. It is a lot easier with Comboot to read stuff. On the tablet and PC it is still OK, just different. I'll be doing a post later with a guide to the new icon, etc, like I did with the other layout options we have available.

The ultimate plan is to make the "Prosilver" layout, which is the one just about everyone uses - or at least has been using a Responsive layout to hopefully give the best of both worlds, but that is still in the future a little.

Just a note on this new style ... I have switched to it for a while now to try it out and it seems pretty good.
However, I have found you don't seem to get an indication of any PMs, so you might want to click on the little "head" symbol occasionally to see if any new messages :s_thumbsup

Will be looking into this further :)
