If it goes into limp mode, it should store a code. Can you read it or get it read?

Could be the SCVs (suction control valves). Do a search online and see if the symptoms match yours but they sound like they do. I have a set for sale if you fancy changing them.

Hello. a new fella here. Im not the guy who can answer your query but I would like to know how to resolve this one. I recently bought a 2004 Rav4 and I want to learn more about the technical stuff, like this one. Need to find solution in case I experience this.

were the scv's new or used?

maybe a fault with them, but could indicate the underlying problem with the old set!

In addition to the above.

If you crank the engine then slacken a fuel pipe, does it release pressure? It might also be worth taking the timing cover off just to make sure all is timed. Despite being a plain high pressure pump, it still should be timed to ensure correct phasing with the injectors.

Take the inlet pipe off the turbo just to make sure there are no blockages.
