We all know that is the better looking version..

Ain't that the truth, chap. A 4x4 that isn't ashamed to look like a 4x4
..............I'll get my coat..........

Mike D, from a dark and windy Dartmoor

:s_biggrin Yep, modern 4x4s are looking more and more like people carriers and loosing their abilities on rough ground. I really don't know what I'll replace my Rav with when the time comes. I use it for fishing and shooting stuff and spend quite a lot of time on farm tracks and in fields. The knobbly tyres help, but I've never seen a 4.3 with all terrain boots on...

Ideally I'd have a landcruiser, but even high milers cost mega bucks

Ah have NEVER seen a Toyota advert that claimed the Rav 4 in any form, past or present, was a "totally suitable OFF ROAD vehicle"......? Was it advertised as such before my interest, which in fairness only harks back 3/4 years mins ?????
Don't particularly like the condescending name of "soft roader"........mine's is a CAR with a high up seat position......
"Nobody knows where my Johnnie has gone"........why sing about a missing condom....?

+1 the 4.2 for the rough stuff.
mine only has duellers on it but i have only found 1 place i nearly got stuck at.
and the gamekeeper avoided that area in his jcb 4x4 :s_biggrin
almost cant wait to get decent a/t tyres on it,but the cost will hurt :s_wink

I believe the 4.1 was referred to as a 4x4 GTi and probably invented the soft roader generation.
and the soft-roader tag was used generally for the RAV4.2 and it's brethren like the shortage and Tucson, with the Suzuki GV being given more of an accolade due to its transmission.
Personally, I think the 4.2 was the last of the RAV off-road/soft-road in appearance, even though I understand each subsequent generation is more capable off-road then the last, so bit of an anomaly there :s_scratchhead

I loved mine with the general grabbers on and the spare wheel cover off, and if I could have found a lift kit like they have in the USA for it, it would have been on there for sure.
If (hopefully WHEN) I get another RAV4, it is most likely a 4.2.5 Petrol, ideally 3-door and will be off-road tyre shod, lifted and exposed spare Billybob (and ideally dark green :s_smile )

All terrain grabbers on mine.. Surprisingly capable off road. The AT tyres, cb aerial and layer of mud give mine an off road air. Also the fact that I'm often wearing camouflage and carrying a shotgun and shooting gear mean it's no Chelsea tractor..
