I honestly cannot remember how close I was, but all my pics are hand held, no hide, and most are at full optical zoom , I've just discovered that if you click on the photos you will see the full details.

Hi I am no expert but you can get something reasonable for £100-£150, look for something that has a good optical zoom. We recently bought a Refurbished Nikon coolpix S9600 on eBay for £90 and very pleased with it. it has a 22 times optical zoom. This is a picture I took of a Bullfinch, it was about 10 meters away and the picture was taken through a dirty window. Dave That’s an amazing photo from a camera that cost £90 :TU:

Ah got it , this was a wild Snowy Owl blown off course by the recent gales . Taken with a Panasonic FZ 150 bridge camera ( now replaced by Fz200 and Fz 330 ) That's a beautiful photo! There's so much choice! I will have a try with my son's camera and go from there! I think I might buy the FZ200 or FZ330, but not sure which one to go for!

Not sure if the same approach is relevant to your selection, but one reason I bought a Pentax D-SLR was it used the traditional K-Mount and I would be able to use my existing Zoom and Telephoto lenses that I used on my old Pentax MV 35mm Camera.

Thanks but I haven’t any old lenses left - not sure what happened to them but probably took to a charity shop.
