My 8yr old grandson wants to take up archery, but their garden is small only 12-15 metres & there is a public footpath at the bottom, wife wanted to buy him a bow for his birthday but I refused just in case of accidents...
Is backstop netting an option? 10yd/10m would be sufficient for practice (and short range competitions) ...

The damage thosebthings can do is unreal.

Found a local club that shoot/loose outside in summer but have an indoor place as well, £10 for a 2 hour taster for him or a 12 hour certified course for £50, which means he can then go & loose anywhere

Some say archery is a pile of old cock feathers. For others it makes them come out in a quiver. Well, you can look quite fletching with your archery kit although the equipment is never very cheap, so you may need to run up a tab. I say don't nock it and embrace it. I'm just wondering how long I can string and draw this out. I'll bow out though.
Back 40 odd years or more, my Dad & brother were in an archery club for a while and I was dragged along. At that age, I was given a fairly lightweight fibreglass bow to "play with". The memory of it is hazy, but I seem to remember spending most of the time aiming up @ about 45 degrees, just to try and hit a target @ about 20 to 30yds, while the big boys were getting golds on targets @ 100yds.
There were major competition rounds held at the club & I seem to remember one member had represented GB @ one of the Olympics. I remember my Dad being involved with the building of a small "shoot" traffic light signalling system for competitions. Red and amber lights came from rear truck lamps. The green was more tricky to get hold of, but I think that eventually came off truck lamps too - Didn't trucks in places like Spain back then, have a green rear lamp to signal "safe to overtake"?
There was an archery equipment manufacturer & shop "Severn Products" in Ombersley, Worcs, which I was taken along to a few times. Company no longer exists, I think.
We only got rid of the old bows a couple of years ago, although they had sat unused for probably decades.

I could imagine having to do that with a little box at that distance. I think you sometimes see people do it before they drop the bow to the target as they are copying Robin Hood and Medieval War movies. Just for info, and is an important point when in a fairly confined area, that is called "Sky Drawing" now and is very frowned upon as if the archer accidently let go, the arrow could go way beyond the range and god knows what it will hit (the archer certainly wouldn't)!

Yeah, the "proper" club members certainly weren't doing it. I wasn't very old (or that wise) & I suspect me & a couple of other youngsters had been given a target to keep us "out of trouble". Big open space & low "poundage" bows though, so no trouble with stray arrows (other than finding them in the grass).
